A practical, step-by-step exploration to identify four emotional coordinates: your body’s signal, your emotion, your need, and your familiar reaction.
A child refuses, cries, shuts down, or needs more than you feel able to give. You want to respond with care—but inside, you may notice tension, pressure, frustration, or urgency.
The signal in your body.
The emotion you may be feeling.
The need beneath it.
Where you notice your usual response.
A clear place to begin, even if you do not have every answer.
A connected path from noticing sensations to understanding your familiar reactions.
A clear crossroads question to bring to Part Two of the map.
“I’m not sure yet” is a valid coordinate, too.
Who want to prepare themselves, not only the environment.
Who want to understand their responses in challenging moments.
Who care about emotional literacy and connection.
Interested in parenting consciously, respectful education, or mindfulness with or without previous training.
You do not need a Montessori certification or previous training—only curiosity and willingness to look within.
Founder, Happy Breathing® · Montessori School Director
Natalia Bennett has spent 26 years leading Mountain West Montessori in El Paso, Texas, working alongside children from infancy through adolescence and the families who raise them. Montessori taught her to observe a child before stepping in. Breathwork taught her to do the same with herself.
She came to the breath as a mother of four running a school, looking for her own way back to center on the hard days. What she found became Happy Breathing®: a way for children and the adults around them to feel what is happening in the body, name it, and answer it with the breath. Her approach has been field-tested with more than 350 children, and she now trains parents, educators, and practitioners to use it.
Natalia doesn't ask adults to stay perfectly calm. Years of practice haven't stopped her from getting triggered. What they've given her is the space between the reaction and the response, and that space is what she helps others find.
